In early 2001, Rusty began a fund to raise money to buy an x-ray machine for the Animal Welfare Society in Bellville South. This welfare clinic, the only charity organisation serving a vast area of the Northern suburbs of Cape Town in South Africa, had basic equipment, but any animals needing x-rays had to be transported to Phillipi, some 30km away.Rusty heard about the need for an x-ray machine from her friend Donna who was the vet there, and on her own initiative, approached friends and fellow cat breeders to raise the necessary funds.

When Rusty was taken ill with cancer a few months later, the management of the fund was taken over by her husband, Des and her good friend Luisa Fontini. After Rusty sadly passed away on 14 August 2001 after a brave fight, many of Rusty's friends bequeathed money in her memory and the fund continued to grow, eventually reaching over R30 000-00.  We gratefully acknowledge donations received for the fund from the following contributors:-
